Welcome! How to Fit, Break In & Care for Your Work Boots & Shoes

Welcome and Thank You!

Thank you for your purchase! We’re excited to have you step into a new pair of boots or shoes that are built to work as hard as you do. A great fit and proper care make all the difference in comfort, performance, and longevity—so let’s get you started on the right foot.

First Wearing's (Breaking Them In)

The “heavier or stiffer” the boot or shoe is, the longer the break-in process will take. Gradually increasing wear time helps improve comfort and prevents unnecessary foot fatigue.

  • Consider not wearing a new “heavy” boot all day long at first but play it by ear as it breaks in as to how soon you can wear it all day/li>
  • Socks Matter! The heavier the shoe or boot, the “thicker” the sock should be.
  • If internal moisture from your foot is a consideration, stay away from primarily cotton socks. Choose socks with moisture-wicking properties to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Fit

  • Boots and shoes should feel snug in the middle and loose in the toes. Very slight movement in the heels of the boot/shoe is ok.
  • In a slip-on boot, slippage of the heel is definitely normal and expected and will go away as long as the instep and ball area are fitted snugly. Be sure your toes are not cramped.

Care

  • All leathers need their natural oils to be replenished as they are worn.
  • The harder the use, the heavier oil should be used, such as mink oil or neatsfoot oil.
  • Dress leathers should only require a thinner, lighter oil
  • The wetter or more caustic the environment, the more oil should be added more frequently.
  • The wetter or caustic environment should have a SnoSeal-like product with beeswax and should be supplemented with the oil for extra waterproofing and preservation.

Tips

  • Ideally, try not to wear the same shoe/boot on consecutive days in a row because it is better to allow the shoe to completely dry inside and out from the previous day's wearing before wearing it again. Wearing a slightly damp shoe/boot will accelerate the interior's wearing prematurely, cause odors, and allow the leather shoe to stretch out of shape sooner, thereby affecting its fit and performance
  • With increased lateral movements and stress on the foot and boot, especially on uneven surfaces and terrain, consider an insole with some structure in the rear portion of the insole to keep the foot centered & improve foot/shoe/boot stability.
