Want to know how your shoes will fit? You’re in luck! Boot World has developed a custom sizing scale to help guide shoe selection and fit for every piece of footwear we sell.

The Boot World Sizing Scale includes two separate scores of 1-5, one for shoe length and one for shoe width, based on the size of an average shoe. A score of 1 is extremely small and a score of 5 is extremely large.

Please refer to the Size and Fit section on each product page for product-specific sizing details. Please note that all information provided here is general and is meant only as an informational guide. All manufacturers and brands have different sizing in many of their shoes.

HOW SHOULD A SHOE FIT?

As work shoe and boot experts, we often get asked, "How should shoes fit?" You might think that you know how a shoe should fit, but we've got news for you: There's more than meets the eye when it comes to properly fitting a work boot or work shoe.

That's why we've put together a few tips that we've learned over the years to help you find the right fit!

HEEL

The heel of the foot should fit comfortably, but not overly tight

ARCH

The mid-foot/arch should fit snug in this part of the shoe for support and control.

BALL

The ball of the foot should rest in the widest part of the shoe.

TOES

The toes should be free, never touching the end or side of the toe box - whether this box is steel, fiber, or leather

Generally, the difference between men's and women's sizing is between 1 and 1.5 sizes and varies by the length of the foot and the width. In addition to the length and shape of the foot, foot pronation is different in men and women. So the angle at which the foot strikes the ground is different from that of men. Also, most manufacturers vary their sizing slightly from one another, and the fit of a Wolverine boot may not be the same as the fit of the same size of a Dr. Martens boot.

For example, Dr. Martens footwear comes in whole sizes only, and there's one size difference between a man's and a woman's size. A women's size 8 is equivalent to a men's size 7 in this brand. And if you're in between sizes, it's recommended to size up rather than down in this brand. In this case, a woman's size 8.5 should size up to a woman's size 9. This converts to a men's size 8 in a Dr. Martens boot.

Another factor to consider is the width. For example, a woman’s size 9B (medium) is equivalent to a man's size 8B (narrow). Most men's footwear, especially work footwear, is only available in medium width. In this case, you may need to size down 1.5 sizes. Adding a thick sock or after market insole should improve the fit.
