How to Clean Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are a crucial piece of equipment for any outdoor enthusiast. Whether you're planning to take a short day hike or a multi-day backpacking trip, your leather hiking boots need to be in top condition to provide the support, comfort, and protection your feet require. However, hiking boots take a beating when you're out on the trails, and they're bound to get dirty and muddy. Properly cleaning your hiking boots after each hike is essential to maintain their quality and extend their life.

In this blog, we'll guide you through the steps of how to clean hiking boots and provide you with tips on how to care for them properly.

Materials needed:

  • Soft-bristled brush or toothbrush

  • Warm water

  • Mild soap or detergent

  • Towel or rag

  • Newspaper

  • Leather conditioner or waterproofing spray (optional)

Step 1: Remove the laces and insoles

Start by removing the laces and insoles from your hiking boots. This makes it easier to clean the boots, and you can clean the laces and insole separately.

Step 2: Brush off any debris

Using a soft-bristled brush or a toothbrush, remove any stubborn dirt, mud, or debris from the leather hiking boots. Pay close attention to the crevices and seams of the boots, where debris tends to accumulate.

Step 3: Wipe down the boots

A damp cloth or towel should be utilized to wipe down the leather boots. If a deeper clean is needed, warm water combined with a gentle soap or detergent should be used, but be mindful not to oversaturate the leather boots, as this could result in harm. Keep in mind that it’s important to rinse out soap completely as to not diminish the material.

If your hiking boots or shoes are made with manmade materials, we recommend using a gentle soap, brush and a hose to wash the entire shoe inside and out until thoroughly cleaned.

Step 4: Dry the boots

After scrubbing them clean, give the hiking boots a thorough drying. To keep them in good shape while drying, stuff the insides of the footwear with a small towel. Don't place the boots near direct sunlight, heat sources, or fans that produce direct heat; this can cause the leather to shrink or become damaged.

Step 5: Condition the leather (optional)

Make sure you know how to waterproof your hiking boots to protect them from the elements. If your hiking boots are made of leather, apply a leather conditioner like our Sno-Seal waterproofing leather protector,  or waterproofing spray to protect the leather and restore its suppleness.  You may also use other waterproofing treatment methods available. Follow the instructions on the conditioner or spray and apply it evenly to the boots. Allow your footwear to completely dry before storing or wearing them. The same method applies whether you have leather hiking shoes vs boots

Step 6: Reattach the laces and insoles

Once the boots are completely dry, reattach the laces and insole. Make sure the laces are tight enough to provide support but not too tight to cause discomfort.

Tips for cleaning hiking boots:

  • Clean your hiking boots after every hike, even if they do not appear dirty.

  • Avoid using strong cleaners and harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to clean your hiking boots, as this can damage the boots.

  • Do not put your hiking boots in the washing machine or dryer.

  • Store your hiking boots in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Properly cleaning your hiking boots after each hike is essential to maintain their quality and extend their life. By following the steps outlined in this blog, you can easily clean your hiking boot and keep them in top condition for years to come.
