How to Waterproof UGGs in 5 Simple Steps

How to Waterproof UGGs in 5 Simple Steps

, by Ed Stone, 5 min reading time

If UGGs are one of your favorite comfort shoes, you may like to wear them as often as you can—even during a season involving wet weather.

And while there’s no way to turn the classic sheepskin UGG into a pair of rain boots, learning how to make UGGs waterproof can help protect you if you’re ever caught sprinting through the heavy rain to get to your front door.

Below, we’ll break down how to make classic sheepskin UGGs water-resistant, as well as introduce you to some truly waterproof boots from UGG.

Classic UGGs Vs. Waterproof UGGs

Before we break down how to make UGGs waterproof, it’s important to know whether your UGG boots are waterproof, to begin with.

Today, UGG still has their original sheepskin style of boot—but they also design loafers, slippers, and other footwear, some of which are built to withstand moisture.

Let’s take a look at classic UGG boots and some waterproof UGG offerings to ensure the pair you choose can resist whatever wet weather you encounter.

Classic UGGs

Classic UGGs were designed as a solution for consumers wanting to know how to keep their feet warm in winter. Classic UGGs keep your feet warm in cool, dry weather—which means you’ll risk damaging their sheepskin and suede if you expose them to moisture.

While the original UGGs aren’t designed for water, the exterior of this suede shoe can be made water-resistant. This can be achieved by treating your UGGs with a water-resistant spray, which helps protect their fabric if you get caught in a drizzle or light rain.

Waterproof UGGs

If you want a pair of UGGs to wear while camping or splashing through rain puddles, your best option is to seek out a waterproof UGG boot.

Here are some of our favorite UGG waterproof boots for men and women:

  • Women’s UGG Classic Clear Mini Boot – Available in black and Natural, this boot combines the classic look of the UGG mini boot with a translucent waterproof TPU upper to keep your feet comfortable, cute, and dry.
  • Women’s UGG Siena Matte Rain Boot – As UGGs’ most protective rain boot, this shoe uses a smooth-finish polyurethane body and a 9.5” shaft height to keep your feet cozy and dry. Meanwhile, the soft sheepskin lining offers the iconic comfort of a classic UGG.
  • Men’s UGG Biltmore Mid Boot – Merging comfort and style, these classic winter boots use water-resistant leather uppers and seam-sealed waterproof construction to keep your feet dry throughout the day.

How To Protect Your Classic UGGs From Water Damage

While you can’t completely water-proof classic UGGs, you can cure them to help them last longer and protect them from incidental rain damage.

Below, we break down how to waterproof UGG boots in five easy steps.

#1 Select A Spray Designed For Suede

First, you’ll want to select a water-resistant spray.1 We recommend choosing one that’s:

  • Designed for cloth and leather shoes
  • Easy to apply
  • Lightweight, which will leave less residue and help you avoid changing the appearance of your UGGs

We like Burleigh Water Repellant because it's all of those things while also being affordable. You can also use the UGG Protector spray.

#2 Clean Your UGGs

Before you treat your UGGs with a waterproof solution, clean them. This will prevent dirt or blemishes from being sealed in place by the spray.1

You’ll use your brush to:

  • Gently brush off any visible dirt or debris
  • Remove any water spots by brushing against the grain of the fabric

A bamboo brush is excellent for achieving a clean finish, but you can also use a soft bristle brush, such as a baby’s hair brush, to remove small spots and get the job done.

#3 Apply Cleaner And Conditioner

Once your UGGs are free of dirt, apply UGG cleaner and conditioner. This will ensure your UGGs are clean and maintain their soft texture, while also preparing them to retain the water-repellant solution in your spray.

#4 Apply Water-Repellent Spray

Go to a well-ventilated area before using the water-repellant spray on your UGGs. Next, spray the boot from about six inches away, unless the packaging on your UGG boot care spray specifies otherwise.

Two light coats are recommended and be sure to use a thin coat as you spray, which will ensure your UGGs dry evenly.1

#5 Know When To Reapply

Once the spray dries, your UGGs should be able to withstand moisture the next time a small rain storm catches you off guard. To keep your UGGs in beautiful condition each time you need to exit the house or car in rainy weather, be sure to reapply each time you expect to be hopping over puddles in your UGGs. Finally, make sure you know how to clean your ugg boots properly, so you can maintain them all year round!
